About Me:
I just graduated from college (Florida State University) and now I'm in the process of deciding what to do with my life. I have degrees in history and political science, and unless I go to grad school, I know those degrees aren't going to be very useful. But I don't really care, to be honest. I loved school, and I really miss it.
I've come to the decision that I'd be a lot happier if I just do what I've always wanted to do. Ever since I was a kid, I've loved to write and felt like my greatest contribution to the world would be through a pen. So, while I've always thought I'd go to grad school and get my PhD, I'm kinda rethinking that plan in favor of living as a writer, no matter how broke I may be in the process. I write both fiction and non-fiction, but I kind of prefer the latter, it puts my degrees to good use. I'm also very much interested in documentary filmmaking, and would love to, at some point, make my own film. Not really sure how I'd go about doing that… but it's the kinda dream job I'd like to make a reality.
My fiance (Dave) and I have just moved to Traverse City, MI from Tallahassee, FL and it's been great so far. I've been able to quit working and pursue writing and my other interests full-time. It's been slow-going, but it's better than working the dead-end job I had before. I'm also considering starting an online community for fellow writers, since I'm having a hard time finding much of help myself as someone just starting out, and I know that I'd like a place to get encouragement and practical advice. Attempting a career like writing is intimidating, so I'm hoping to create a little positivity since I'm going through the same thing.
For now, I'm spending my time reading. A lot. My goal for the year is 30 books, so I still have a while to go, but I'm happy to be back to reading for pleasure instead of for school. Please recommend stuff for me! My amazon list is 700+ strong and I'm always looking for another fantastic read! Check out my yearly “to read” list: http://www.listsofbests.com/list/46855
I'm also working on living by my principles, since it seems like there are a lot of people out there that have beliefs they don't live by, and that's pointless. So my 43 things list is my guide, and I'm slowly but surely winning the battle against laziness. http://www.43things.com/person/cryfreedom57
Some essentials: I vote Democrat (supporting Barack Obama this time around), always have and probably always will. Human Rights activism is a major part of my life and one of the most important things in the world to me. I'm an idealist. I genuinely want to change the world for the better. I can't stand people that are comfortable with the status quo and will stand by idly. I was born an activist and will never stop believing that what I do makes a difference. I want my life to mean something beyond my own experience.
Please message me, add me to your friends list, etc. I love meeting new and interesting people!
